Where's Jesus When You Need Him?

Let's start this off right. Now please don't take offence to this list as these following individuals are just examples to explain my point. So, first off, I want to answer this question in this post. And if you have an opinion, I'd like you to please, with all appreciation, comment below.

Who exactly is the central figure of this generation? The one everyone knows, looks up to, or one day, wants to become.

Do we have to look to Twitter followers or Facebook friends/likes to get the answer? If we did, Justin Bieber, Lady Gaga and Barak Obama would make the top 3. But what happened to those we thought were at top? Ex. The Queen or even the Pope. Yes they seem to hold higher power, but why don't THEY have more followers than those three? You don't see them at the top of the list, nor even close to the top. And why is that? How come a teenager we just heard about three years ago rise to the top of stardom, way passed the Queen and the Pope?

And let me just say that I have nothing against the Queen or the Pope, but only because I grew up two decades ago; I have no idea how else we would've known who was the central figure back in the day, but since a chart has been made and a way to tell, then my point should be made.

I think, in my opinion it has something to do with popularity with today's younger generation and the addition to social media in our daily lives. Three years ago, we wouldn't have said, ''Did you read my tweet?" What the hell was a tweet? Or before Facebook, we would ACTUALLY have to talk to people - oh, the horror. And I don't believe the Pope, nor the Queen grew up online as did today's younger generation.

Those few who have been introduced to Twitter, Facebook and YouTube at a very young age are the main reason for today's decrease in popularity with the Queen and the Pope. Because social media is an on-going fad with young adults, teens and children, there is no doubt that they have more of an influence over who has the most followers. They grew up with it, and now they will be the one with the power over who receives the most followers, or Facebook likes. Think, if you go back to view that list, you see most of the followers are entertainers, politicians or musicians. It is very unlikely for a world figure to get many followers because for one, children growing up are always looking for fun and/or entertainment; they like being amused. An American musician, a Canadian singer and an American politician, or do we still call them that knowing that they are recognized world-wide?

The title, 'Where's Jesus When You Need Him?' suggests that we find ourselves in a time where the younger generation can make decisions for their own, and celebrities can encourage them to do so - unlike back in the day, of course - without today's social media reach. What I'm saying is that throughout history, there has always been a central figure the world came to know for what they did and who they were. You can recall for example the people who made history, who changed history, who made a name for themselves etc. But with today's addition to lists and charts and friends and followers, we can assume it wasn't as easy as it was when the Queen or the Pope were growing up. So to choose a figure like Jesus, the person he was, what he did, what he left behind, he could have just been the first one we would've followed, right?

Now that summer's almost over, what is there to look forward to? A new school year, that's what.

Now my favourite part; my funnies that I've saved up especially for this post. This is something I like to call "Frustrating Uses of Etc..." These following sentences are unfinished, and possibly for a bad reason too.
  • “I’m looking forward to our date. Why don’t you pick me up at my parents’ house. Here’s how you get there: Take Highway 11 North, after you go through the second toll, get into the left lane, etc.”
  • "Honey, there's something I have to tell you. I invited Christine over last week and well, we had some fun, etc."
  • "Dear whomever this may concern, I am writing this recommendation letter for Gary. He is a student in my English class etc. Sincerely, Evelyn Sprague (English Teacher)”
  • “I just got off the phone with my colleague, Dr. Ryan. I’m afraid the test results are not as good as we had hoped. In your abdomen we found something, etc.”
  • "Hey babe, how many men have you slept with before me?" "Well, there was Bob, Louis, Eric etc."
You're welcome.

Not a big update this time. Just a short notification. Well, still no sign of the iPod, so in that case, no music update. I'm proud to announce that again I will be working Summer in the Park in North Bay on the 29th-31st and then will return home to Toronto for further considerations with the end of summer plans. Oh and I'll try to blog more and more. And don't forget to visit my media site That Media Hut - updated hourly.

R.I.P. Amy Winehouse and get better soon, Mr. Layton.

Thanks for reading and see you soon.
