“The Future is (was) Exciting!”

(Above: A quote from Paul Street, a Director of Research with CTV and CP24. He recently spoke to our program via Skype this past week and we sorta learned a lot from him).

The meaning behind that picture is because after our program got cancelled last year, and after hearing another one of our professors won't be teaching us for the final year next year, we're unsure of how the college expects us to make it in the business. Well, we decided as a class to prove Mr. Burton wrong and prove to him they made the wrong decision cutting our program.

Good evening, it's just after 9pm on this Friday night and with nothing planned and nothing better to do, time to introduce you to 2012. Not to mention we're already in the second month and the first month flew by pretty quickly. Let's just hope that's not a sign for the entire year.

To catch you up to date with myself, I'm still an aspiring Journalist studying in North Bay to one day hoping to make it on the big screen. (because all TV's are going to big screens in the future). If you have been following me, I've become more constant with posting stories and current events to my news feed, as wells as interesting...things. That Media Hut is slowly growing to what I believed it would be, but it's still a long ways away from a public audience. But 20 followers aren't bad, right?

I just recently published my first article on Canadore's student paper website, The Claw.ca and have also wrote and recorded my voice for Canadore's radio station, Panther Radio. It keeps me busy and it gives me a platform to display myself. I also have shot many TV reports around the college last year and I hope to showcase them on a separate YouTube channel in the next few days. Beware, they are not my best, but I do appreciate feedback.

Now, talking about new stories, we brought up a point in class about there being limitations to what you can produce. Especially living in a small city like North Bay - there's only so many stories to do! Well, this past week, one of our assignments was to search stories on familiar news sites across the province and relate it to a local angle (if any) and then go over the steps necessary for reporting the actual story. In other words, we're taking a story happening somewhere else and seeing if we can find a local angle to it - one that may just very well be taking place in North Bay.

I came across this one. (Believe me, you'll understand why I chose it.)

It's a story out of Windsor about dwarf tossing, and honestly, I never even heard of such a thing before. It's just completely and insanely hilarious. Now we went over this one and finding a local angle to it wasn't all that difficult, it was finding a local who was pint size who preferably "has been tossed" before. We thought of all the possibilities and not to make fun of short people, but I just thought it was a short-coming. I wasn't going to do it because that's about as far as my limitations would go. I mean, despite the humour and the chance to cover something in a small package, it just wasn't my type of angle. I did end up choosing a more challenging one and I have the week to finish it.

In other news, I have began working on becoming more healthier this year. I'm actually starting to eat vegetables and cook for myself, and believe it or not, I came up with a routine to have me get back in shape by the end of the month. And if that's not enough for ya, I have also been following through with my resolution this year which was to not eat out at any fast food restaurants and so far, I have not done so. With the routine finally kicking in, I'm starting to understand why I wanted to live away from home in the first place. It didn't have anything to do with family members, but the lack of motivation I was experiencing. Now coming into full gear, I seem now to accomplish more things then I'd ever have the chance to do, and this is only the beginning. And then comes summer - that's another story.

Before I get too far ahead of myself, keep in check with me on Twitter, and Facebook and Google+ if you think you're up to date with social networking. Otherwise, I'll see you very soon.

-Drew
